PERSONALITY: Compared to her overly-flamboyant and loud Capatain, many may miss Nanao’s presence on the first glance - but it is their loss if they do. Like steel in silk, Nanao is the driving force that keeps the Eighth Division moving. She does not only her own ridiculously huge amount of paperwork, but her Captain’s, too. In addition to this, she writes an advice column for the monthly Seireitei Communication magazine, entitled “Please Be Moderate” in which she answers the questions of readers on a variety of subjects. She is also apparently the Vice-President of the Shinigami Women’s Association, but that can change as the President (One Kusajishi Yachiru) decides that Nanao’s sensibilities do not suit her plans for SWEET SHOP DOMINATION and elects Nemu to that position instead. In her free time, she also enjoys shopping, playing the piano, and reading books from the Library. As a result, she has a good working knowledge of mythology, history, and strategy/tactics throughout the ages.

So, it’s clear that Nanao’s got her eyes on the prize for busiest Shinigami - but why, you may ask? Surely she has enough on her plate, what with how she practically runs the Eighth and all. The reason for that is very simple. All this work keeps her from thinking about her past, which in all honesty, has sucked a massive bag of dicks. As a Shinigami, she has lived both a human life and that of a soul, and then that of a small part of a massive military organisation whose stated purpose is to destroy Hollows - which are, quite horrifically, corrupted human souls. Shadows, if you will.

One of Nanao’s major flaws is that she bottles everything up, keeping everything behind a mask until it becomes too much and she lashes out violently at anyone around her – that said, even at her most incandescent, she makes the effort to remove herself from any situation that could result in anyone else being harmed. She sees her problems as being her own to deal with, and while she is rather friendly and open, she finds it extremely hard to open up about herself and to lets others help her, rather than trying and sometimes failing to deal with them herself. This stems from her early life as a spirit in the Rukongai. Due to her large and unstable reserves of spiritual energy, she not only accidentally destroyed property and suffocated other souls, she attracted the attention of Hollows - which is an extremely bad thing.

ABILITIES: Nanao is first of all, physically fit. Actually, she’s more than that. She’s in her physical prime, and trained to within a literal inch of her life. There is very little she can’t defeat when given a sword - or even unarmed! However, considering that all supernatural abilities are sealed, she loses a part of this ability. The first - and possibly most traumatic - thing she would notice is her complete lack of spiritual awareness and energy. Even as a human, she possessed the power to interact with the spiritual world to a limited degree. As a shinigami, she fully mastered her abilities, becoming one of the most proficient kidou users in Seireitei.

Kidou, or "Demon Arts", involve the harnessing of one's spiritual energy and moulding it via incantations to produce spells of varying effects, including offensive, defensive, and communication-related. It can take years to become truly proficient in it, and it is generally the mark of a highly-ranked Shinigami - although there are several notable exceptions. (Renji, I’m talking about you here.) Normally, one would use incantations to help mould one’s raw spiritual energy into the correct form, but Nanao is skilled enough to use middle to high ranked kidou silently - that is, without any form of incantation or warning at all. This is not only unusual, but very difficult, as it takes a greater degree of control than simply shouting out a spell.

In addition to magic, she is also a physically able swordswoman, capable of wielding staff-like weapons such as pollaxes and halberds in addition to the more standard swords such as katana and wakizashi. She uses these to attack and cleanse Hollows, in addition to sparring against other Shinigami, so she’s very good with them. She also has very good aim and due to her excellent upper body strength, can throw heavy objects (encyclopedias, dictionaries, small children, swords) with ease. As she’s in prime physical condition, she can also fight hand-to-hand very well, although her height and light weight prove to be rather disadvantageous, since most of her opponents are larger and stronger than she tends to be.

She makes up for this disadvantage in being incredibly nimble and flexible


POSSESSIONS: A giant book that weighs about ten kilos (I'm not even joking), three notepads (one completely filled, one half-way filled, one empty), three brushes, two ink bottles (one full, the other part empty), blotting paper, an assortment of ballpoint pens, an umbrella, a copy of the Eighth’s Guidelines (annotated), a deck of cards (regulation, well-used), two small novels (The Hobbit and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe), four handkerchiefs, and a bamboo container of water (full). In addition to all of that, she also has the clothes on her back and her white Lieutenant's armband. She comes prepared, or not at all! Although we aren’t quite sure about how she’ll carry all of that around, since her hyperspace sleeves don’t work in Caligo...

SHADOW: Shadow: Nanao’s shadow is bitter, and angry. She’s passionate, and lashes out at anyone and anything who tries to get close. She’s been through a lot of shit, and this version is quite happy to let you know how much it all hurts.

Dungeon: The first few floors are quite... sterile, for want of a better word. Then the walls/floors/ceilings start showing gouges, slashes, and claw marks. Small vines appear to curl in through them. Shadows start appearing more often, and the air seems to grow more humid. Each floor has more shadows, more jungle, and less building. The last floors are all jungle, and those exploring it must follow the waterways to a vast ruined city, where trees and greenery and living things have taken over and destroyed every attempt to control them.

Boss Battle:

PERSONA: Nanao’s persona is Ixchal, her Zanpakutou Spirit. Ixchal is in turn derived from Ixchel, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixchel), the Mayan Goddess of midwifery and medicine. She is also associated with the earth, moon, rain, and war. Note that instead of the anthropomorphic appearance of Ixchel as an aged woman, Ixchal is much more monstrous in appearance.

The first thing one would notice about Ixchal is her sheer size. A secondary concern is that she appears to be some sort of eldritch abomination, with eight legs (four of which usually stay out of the way by curling around the four main limbs) and far too many human hands attached to human arms that are quite long. For all her fearsome appearance, however, Ixchal is essentially a pacifist, only really reacting when something - or someone - she has sworn to protect is attacked. And then all bets are off.

As Ixchal is quite obviously tied to the earth, she will be Earth-aligned! But she’ll also have a few Strike- and Water-based skills, as well as Heal skills. This is tied to both Nanao’s death, her shikai (Initial release of a zanpakutou), and kidou skills.
